Aran Wool

Our Aran wool is perfect for creating your own jumper or cardigan. You are able to purchase this great, 100% wool, yarn in either balls or cones. One cone of Aran yarn will be enough to make your very own adult-size Aran jumper or cardigan. Of course, if you find that you would simply prefer to buy an already finished Aran jumper or cardigan, then we have many of those available too, with each having been handmade right here in Scotland.

Aran wool is the traditional resource used to make icon Aran knitwear, famous for its woven patterns and surrounded by intrigue and myth.

At Old Byre Showroom, the Aran wool that we have available is made by the New Lanark Mill at the New Lanark World Heritage Site here in Scotland. Like traditional Aran yarns, our balls of wool are also made of 100% wool, with no synthetic fibres woven in. Prized for certain beneficial properties, Aran wool was the ideal material to use for making jumpers that were suited to island life on the West coast of Ireland. Wool is a naturally strong and elastic fibre, it is also exemplary at absorbing moisture and has abundant insulating properties.
